The Innovation Law and Technology Program (ILTP) is an interdisciplinary initiative at the College of Law that explores the legal, regulatory, and policy dimensions of emerging technologies. Designed as a collaborative hub for faculty across the University of Illinois campus, ILTP fosters connections between law and diverse scientific and technical domains, supporting both foundational research and applied innovation. The Program offers almost two dozen courses and several clinics, taught by more than a dozen full-time and adjunct faculty. ILTP students have gone on to work for AmLaw 100 law firms, public interest organizations, government agencies, technology startup companies, and as federal and state law clerks. ILTP is also home to the student-run Journal of Law, Technology & Policy, a scholarly publication dedicated to “new technologies that raise important policy questions in both foreign and domestic jurisdictions.” ILTP also puts on a variety of programming throughout the academic year, including workshops, seminars, monthly lunchtime talks, and a faculty Law and Technology Journal Club.
Led by Co-Directors Sarah Lawsky and Jacob S. Sherkow, ILTP is organized around faculty-led Research Groups focused on key thematic areas. Current groups include Intellectual Property, Regulation, and the Biosciences (Jacob S. Sherkow); Law, Formal Methods, and Computer Science (Sarah Lawsky); and Health Law and Artificial Intelligence (Sara Gerke).
