Professor Colleen Murphy is part of the organizing committee for the inaugural workshop on Paradigms and Transformations in Transitional Justice and Human Rights. Hosted at the University of Birmingham in May 2025, the conference seeks to bring together leading experts in transitional justice and human rights. The aim of this initial workshop is to explore dominant visions of accountability within transitional justice and human rights, as well as to develop ideas for future collaborations by exploring key aspects of the relationship between transitional justice and human rights—synergies, tensions, and other patterns and divergences.

The organizers are seeking abstracts considering questions including:

How are the transitional justice and human rights fields related and how are they distinct?

What has shaped the anti-impunity paradigm in these fields?

What visions of accountability and prevention in each field have been displaced by, or could displace, penality?

How might human rights be mobilised to critically examine problematic (racial/colonial/carceral) paradigms within transitional justice, and vice versa?

Both academics and practitioners working in the fields of transitional justice and human rights are invited to submit abstracts (max. 300 words) on these topics by November 15, 2024, by email to Kate Webster: klw564@student.bham.ac.uk. Participants selected will be asked to share draft papers or paper outlines (minimum 2,000 words – maximum 8,000 words) prior to the workshop to facilitate discussion.

Quadrangle, the magazine of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, profiled the Illinois Scholars at Risk program in its Spring 2024 issue. The profile highlights the work done by the program, chaired by Professor Colleen Murphy. The program offers assistance to scholars who face danger at home, and the Illinois group has brought seven scholars to campus from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Guatemala, Lebanon, and Ukraine. “It is incredibly rewarding to see colleges and departments from across campus support colleagues from across the globe facing acute risks and to hear from scholars about the difference the program has made in their lives,” Murphy said.

Professor Colleen Murphy has co-authored an op-ed titled “Israel, Hamas, and the Narratives of Atrocity.” The piece was published on October 25 for the Daily Nous. An excerpt follows:

“Ending and preventing atrocity requires exposing and contesting the narratives that explain, rationalize, and defend the indefensible, enabling human beings to countenance and inflict suffering indifferent to the pain it creates. It requires a refusal to dehumanize fellow human beings and a refusal to see any person as ‘deserving’ of atrocity because they are perceived as oppressors, terrorists, and/or savages. It requires insisting on the necessity of restraint in action. Occupation does not justify massacre. Self-defense does not justify collective punishment and starvation. One’s humanity is not protected (nor is one’s security guaranteed) by abdicating one’s humanity in relation to others.”

Read the full op-ed at dailynous.com.
